An expert who fled communist Cuba is sounding the alarm on what he describes as a "vicious cycle" of socialist candidates capturing congressional seats—warning that the United States could soon see double-digit communists serving in the House of Representatives. Mike Gonzalez, a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation and a survivor of Castro's regime, told VNN that the progressive wing of the Democratic Party has grown bolder with each election cycle, emboldened by a media establishment that refuses to accurately label their agenda. "We are watching the same patterns play out here that I witnessed as a young man in Cuba," Gonzalez said. "The difference is that Americans still have the power to stop it—if they choose to recognize what is happening before it's too late."

The Squad Grows Larger

Gonzalez pointed specifically to the expansion of the so-called "Squad"—the loosely organized bloc of self-identified democratic socialists including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, Cori Bush, and Jamaal Bowman—as evidence that radical candidates are increasingly able to win primaries in safe Democratic districts. He noted that candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have notched victories in local races across the country, from city councils to district attorney offices, creating a farm system that feeds increasingly radical politicians into the national pipeline. "When I came to this country, the idea of an avowed socialist winning a congressional seat was unthinkable," Gonzalez said. "Now we have members of Congress who have openly praised socialist regimes, and the press treats it as a legitimate policy disagreement rather than what it is: a direct threat to the constitutional order."

The Media's Role in Normalization

The Heritage scholar was particularly critical of mainstream media outlets for what he called a deliberate effort to obscure the ideological roots of progressive candidates, framing their policies as mainstream Democratic positions rather than the socialist framework they actually represent. He argued that voters are not being told the truth about the economic and social consequences of policies like the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, and the dismantling of private enterprise—agendas he said mirror the early stages of Cuba's transformation under Fidel Castro. "The communists in Cuba didn't announce their full intentions on day one," Gonzalez warned. "They came in talking about reform, about fairness, about helping the poor. By the time people realized what was happening, the guns were already pointed at them."

A Warning Americans Can't Ignore

The broader significance of Gonzalez's warning extends far beyond a single election cycle. With public education systems, cultural institutions, and major corporations increasingly embracing left-wing ideological frameworks, the pipeline of socialist candidates shows no signs of drying up. Gonzalez's message is a call to action for conservative voters and donors to take seriously the ideological battle at every level of government—not just the presidency. If the trend continues unchecked, he warned, the next decade could see an American Congress with a communist caucus large enough to dictate terms to Democratic leadership and shape national policy. For a man who lost his homeland to totalitarianism, the stakes could not be clearer. "Freedom is not the default setting," Gonzalez said. "It has to be defended, or it will be taken from you—one election at a time."
